The future of West Virginia's children is in our hands. Let's make them our #1 priority.

The #1 Question: Is it good for children? Campaign is a statewide effort led by Prevent Child Abuse West Virginia.

Our goal is for all of us – parents, citizens and lawmakers – to use the question “Is it good for children?” as a litmus test for our actions.

“The #1 Question” Campaign includes:

  • A series of community public policy forums across the state during the months of November, December and in early January.
  • A Legislative Breakfast on Jan. 10, 2012 on the eve of the WV Legislative Session.
  • Sharing updates and alerts throughout the legislative session to urge lawmakers to take action that improves the lives of West Virginia’s children and families.
  • A blog with campaign news and ideas.

We hope you’ll join us as we raise our voices to proclaim that children should be the #1 priority for our state.  Please remember, the #1 question all of us should ask “Is it good for children?

Our guest speaker, Jetta Bernier, is a national expert on preventing child sexual abuse such as the high profile cases that have occurred at Penn State and elsewhere.

Jetta Bernier directs the Enough Abuse Campaign, a growing, nationally recognized initiative to prevent child sexual abuse that has been working in Massachusetts since 2002. The Enough Abuse Campaign is a comprehensive citizen education and community mobilization effort, which the federal Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) has hailed as "a trailblazing effort."  Its emphasis on community collaboration, according to the Ms. Foundation, "truly sets it apart from previous efforts."

We hope you will plan to join us for this important conversation about how we can protect every child in West Virginia from the tragedy of child sexual abuse. Please email pcawv@teamwv.org to RSVP today.

11-1-11 Let’s Make Children #1 in WV
Posted on November 1, 2011

Today the calendar reads 11-1-11, and it’s a great opportunity to invite your friends to participate in the #1 Question: “Is it good for children?” Campaign.

We have had a successful year with events across West Virginia where individuals and organizations are stepping up and asking lawmakers to make children the #1 priority for our state.  We have even made some progress at the State Capitol as legislators made modest investments to increase funding for In-Home Family Education and other worthwhile services for children and families.

But much work needs to be done, and we are going to keep doing it.

We are going to continue calling on lawmakers and every West Virginian to ask the #1 question: “Is it good for children?” as a litmus test for every action.

As Governor Tomblin prepares his budget for the upcoming year, we are going to call on him to include significant investments in the well-being of children.

As lawmakers debate issues of health care and jobs, we are going to call on them to enact policies that protect the health of West Virginia children and lift them out of poverty.

Today is 11-1-11! The calendar is reminding us that there is 1 thing that is most important — our children!

As part of our public policy campaign, "The #1 Question: Is it Good for Children?", Prevent Child Abuse West Virginia is pleased to have helped sponsor more than a dozen Community Public Policy Forums around the state during the past 2 months.

These events have provided local community organizations the opportunity to meet with local lawmakers and policymakers to educate them about their priorities on behalf of children.

Our goals for the events include:

  • Mobilizing grassroots activity on behalf of children’s issues,
  • Educating lawmakers about local priorities,
  • Building relationships with lawmakers,
  • Distributing information about our public policy campaign, "The #1 Question: Is it Good for Children?"

Organizers have been very creative including having local legislative breakfasts, convening legislative briefings, inviting lawmakers to tour local child serving agencies, milk and cookie holiday open house parties, and community roundtable discussions.

Events will culminate with our 2nd Annual "#1 Question: Is it good for children?" Legislative Breakfast on Tuesday, Jan. 10 at the Charleston Town Center Marriott from 7:30 a.m. - 8:30 a.m.  To RSVP for the breakfast, please email pcawv@teamwv.org.
